Who Gives A Crap Profile

We donate 50% of our profits to ensure everyone has access to clean water and a toilet within our lifetime

Sure, we love puppies and sunny days and walks on the beach, but our real love is toilet paper. Why, you might ask? First of all, it’s funny. Lots of room for toilet jokes, which we love. But really, we love toilet paper because for us, it’s our way of making a difference. We started Who Gives A Crap when we learnt that 2.4 billion people don’t have access to a toilet (now 2 billion – yay for progress!). That’s roughly 40% of the global population and means that around 289,000 children under five die every year from diarrhoeal diseases caused by poor water and sanitation. That’s almost 800 children per day, or one child every two minutes. We thought that was pretty crap. So in July 2012, Simon, Jehan and Danny launched Who Gives A Crap with a crowdfunding campaign on IndieGoGo. Simon sat on a toilet in our draughty warehouse and refused to move until we had raised enough pre-orders to start production. 50 hours and one cold bottom later, we’d raised over $50,000 (see the video here!) We delivered our first product in March 2013 and have been thrilled to keep growing ever since. Not just because our toilet paper is gracing bathrooms across the country but also because we donate 50% of our profits to help build toilets and improve sanitation in the developing world. Though we’re still growing, and now make more than just toilet paper, we always want to stay true to our roots: toilet humor and making the world a better place.

Who Gives A Crap Sustainability Actions

Together we’ve raised over $18 million Aussie dollars to date

We donate 50% of our profits to ensure that everyone has access to clean water and a toilet within our lifetime. We partner with amazing organizations that work hand-in-hand with local communities to create sustainable and scalable solutions for the billions of people who still don’t have access. With our help, our impact partners reached over 575,000 people in 2023. We’re so grateful for our community, the hundreds of thousands of people who put their bums on the line, for making this happen.

Meet our impact partners

We are proud to support incredible organisations that share our mission to ensure everyone has access to clean water and safe toilets. Below is a list of our current impact partners: Fresh Life (Kenya) Fresh Life implements an end-to-end sanitation model for informal settlements in Kenya, delivering dignified, desirable sanitation products and services that meet the needs of low-income residents, and safely removes human waste from these communities. The whole system facilitates safe sanitation, cleaner environment, and sustainable sources of income. Water for People (Guatemala, Honduras, Peru, Bolivia, Malawi, Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and India) Water for People has pioneered the “Everyone Forever” approach. That means their goal is to ensure every household, school, and health clinic has access to WASH (water, sanitation and hygiene) AND the local government has the capacity to maintain these services for generations to come. WaterAid Australia (Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste and Cambodia) WaterAid’s mission is to transform the lives of the poorest and most marginalised people by improving access to WASH.

Good for your bum

We don’t use any inks, dyes or scents in our toilet paper, and all our products are vegan. Not only do we not use virgin trees to make our products, we also don’t use any animal derived ingredients. Even our glue is just starch and water. We do not use any animal testing (unless you count the finest human bottoms). Our TP is also gluten free, but no one ever asks about that.

Our decision to make shipping carbon neutral

We’re so excited to announce that all of our shipping (from the factory all the way to you) is now completely carbon neutral. Why’d we do it? Well, because we think it’s the right thing to do. We’ve always said that our goal is to do the most good – whether it be for people or for the planet. This is the next step in that journey. We decided to go with an offset broker called Pachama. Our offsetting is focused on the Agrocortex project in Brazil and the Central Kalimantan Peatlands project in Indonesia. The Agrocortex project protects an area of untouched rainforest in Brazil’s most biodiverse region from deforestation. You can read more about it here – we think it’s pretty great! The Central Kalimantan Peatlands project is equally awesome – it aims to reduce Indonesia’s emissions by preserving 15,091 hectares of tropical peat swamp forests (home to creatures like the endangered Bornean orangutan).

We convinced our landlord to spell out CRAP in solar panels

In very serious and exciting news: we convinced one of the biggest landlords in Australia to install solar panels on the rooftop of our Melbourne warehouse. Even more serious and exciting: the panels spell out the words ‘WE GIVE A CRAP!!’ Why that specific message? Because we care about the future of our planet and wanted to shout about it from our rooftops. Putting our entire team on the roof with megaphones was a safety hazard, so solar panels it was.

Who Gives A Crap Sustainability Commitments

2020 – Carbon neutral shipping

Since 2020, all of our shipping (from the factory all the way to you) has been completely carbon neutral.

2023 – No Deforestation

You may have heard us banging on about deforestation, and the fact our toilet paper doesn’t come from trees like regular TP. It’s something we’ve been passionate about right from the beginning, when our founder was busy sitting on a loo to raise money for our first production run. But now we’ve gone a step further! We’ve made an official No Deforestation Commitment

2023 – Forestry Stewardship Council

In July 2023 we gained full FSCÂŽ Chain-of-Custody certification (C190271), meaning that our entire supply chain – from farm to warehouse – is FSC certified! All our tissue products, across all our markets, come straight from FSC-certified sources. It’s a big win for supporting environmentally-friendly practices and helping keep our planet’s forests thriving.

2025 – Electric Vehicles

We’re continuing the transition of our warehouse-to-customer transportation in Australia to electric vehicles! In 2025 we are planning to increase the number of dedicated EV’s from 4 to 11 & then continue to increase in 2026.
