This Christmas, Sustainable Choice Group is proud to partner with DV Safe Phone in their annual appeal to deliver safe phone kits for Christmas, helping make safety possible for thousands of Australians facing domestic and family violence. DV Safe Phone is an Australian not-for-profit organisation collecting, refurbishing and distributing working mobile phones as life-saving Safe Phone Kits for people in crisis.

While many of us are preparing for festive celebrations, the holiday season is the most dangerous time of year for victim-survivors. The combination of stress, isolation, financial pressure and increased alcohol consumption can intensify abusive behaviours, placing more lives at risk. In New South Wales alone, Christmas Day and Boxing Day have historically seen up to 78% more domestic violence–related assaults than an average day.

DV Safe Phone collects and repurposes working mobile phones that would otherwise go unused or to landfill, turning them into life-saving Safe Phone Kits. These kits are distributed to people in crisis. It’s a powerful act of circular impact: reducing e-waste while restoring connection, dignity and safety.

Why now? The urgent need for safe, untraceable devices

Technology-facilitated abuse, including harassment, surveillance, tracking and coercive control, is increasing across Australia. For many people, the phone they rely on every day can become a tool of monitoring or harm.

Right now, DV Safe Phone is dispatching up to 250 Safe Phone Kits every week through frontline agency partners. These kits provide survivors with a critical tool: a private, untraceable phone to call for help, activate a safety plan or stay connected to caseworkers and support services.

A safe, reset, untraceable phone can:

• Provide a private line to call for help
• Restore independence and security
• Offer a pathway to support services
• Reduce the risk of monitoring or digital control

DV Safe Phone partners with more than 500 frontline agencies to ensure every donated device reaches someone who needs a secure way to connect.

• Devices with cracked screens
• Unlocked phones (preferred)
• Phones that can power on and hold charge
• Factory-reset devices (DV Safe Phone can also wipe them as long as they are unlocked)
