A look at Zea, 2025 Small Business Champion

As we look ahead to the 2026 Sustainability Tracker Impact Awards, one thing is clear: The bar for what meaningful progress looks like is rising.

Last year’s Small Business Champion, Zea, is a strong example of where that bar is now sitting. Not because of one standout initiative, but because of how consistently sustainability shows up across the business.

Where purpose connects to decisions: building a sustainable supply chain

For Zea, sustainability shapes how the business operates.

That shows up in decisions that are easy to overlook but hard to execute well. Manufacturing locally to maintain quality and reduce emissions. Working with growers who avoid harmful chemicals. Building supply chains that reflect the same standards as the end product.

Judges called out the strength of this alignment. The link between purpose and action was clear, and it extended across operations, supply chain and customer outcomes.

The unseen work behind the results

A lot of sustainability work sits behind the scenes. This is where Zea has focused much of its effort.

Zero-waste production processes. Compostable mailers. Repurposing by-products into usable materials. This kind of work is often what separates stand out businesses who truly integrate sustainability in every aspect of their business.

Pushing change in constrained environments: ethical packaging leadership

One of the clearest signals of leadership is where a business chooses to push.

For Zea, that has also been in their packaging.

Operating in a TGA-regulated category means packaging decisions are tightly constrained. Product stability, safety and compliance all come first. In many cases, that leaves little room for environmental improvement.

Zea invested in developing a fully recyclable packaging solution within those constraints.

Judges pointed to this as a defining example of leadership, precisely because of how difficult it was to achieve.

It’s also where small businesses can have outsized influence. When one company proves something is possible, it shifts expectations for the rest of the category too.

Extending impact beyond the product

Another aspect that stood out in Zea’s submission was how broadly impact is considered.

Internally, that includes paying above minimum wage, supporting employee development and offering flexible working arrangements.

Externally, it includes long-term partnerships and structured commitments.

Zea’s Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan sets a clear framework for how the business approaches reconciliation, from building relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to embedding accountability through governance and reporting.

Partnerships like Karrkad Kanjdji Trust extend that further, supporting Indigenous-led conservation and community initiatives on the ground.

Their customers recognise the difference

Sustainability only creates value in a business when it’s seen and felt by the customer.

Zea’s 14,000+ five-star reviews prove that connection is flourishing. Customers are responding to what this business stands for, alongside how the product performs.

Judges highlighted this as an important signal in their submission for an Impact Award. High customer satisfaction that is backed by consistent positive feedback shows that sustainability and commercial outcomes reinforce each other for Zea.

What this means heading into 2026

Looking at Zea’s approach, a few patterns stand out.

Progress is built into operations. Impact is considered across the full value chain. Constraints are treated as a reason to innovate. This business’s commitments are structured, measured and visible.

This is the level of thinking we’re seeing more of across the Sustainability Tracker community, and it’s what judges will be looking for in the 2026 Impact Awards.

Zea’s work is a strong reminder that small businesses can shape how entire categories move forward.

Congratulations again to Zea on being named 2025 Small Business Champion.

As we head into judging for the 2026 Sustainability Tracker Impact Awards, this is the standard.
