How Adorn Cosmetics Built a Circular Beauty Model From 2008

Refillable beauty is now a recognised category. Brands across Australia and overseas are launching refill pods, compacts designed for reuse, and packaging built to be topped up rather than thrown away. For us at Adorn Cosmetics, this is a welcome shift, and one we started working towards back in 2008.

We introduced refillable makeup and skincare that year, a world first at the time, and we’ve spent more than 17 years building that idea into daily practice rather than a one-off.

Who started refillable makeup

Adorn Cosmetics was founded in Melbourne by Briony Kennedy in 2008. From the outset, we sold our products without single-use outer boxes or plastic seals, and we developed refill sachets and pods so customers could keep their compacts and containers and simply reload the formula when it ran out.

Our founder built the refill system as a direct response to how much packaging the beauty industry generates with every purchase. Each refill sachet or pan replaces a full new container, which keeps the plastic, the pump, the outer box, and the shipping materials out of circulation entirely. That’s the mechanism behind circular beauty: designing the waste out before the product ever reaches a customer, rather than asking the customer to manage it afterwards through recycling.

What circular beauty means in practice

Circular beauty keeps materials in active use for as long as possible through reduction, reuse, and refilling. It sits apart from recyclable packaging, which still produces new materials with every purchase and depends on the customer and their council recycling system to process it once the product is used up.

Our approach has always centred on preventing waste at the source. We don’t use single-use outer boxes or plastic seals on any product. We ship using biodegradable and post-consumer recycled materials. And any packaging that genuinely can’t be refilled goes to TerraCycle, where it’s processed into products like plant pots and outdoor furniture rather than landfill.

The numbers behind 17 years of refillable makeup in the Australian market

Since 2008, our customers have purchased more than 221,000 product refills. That volume of refills has kept over 11,000kg of packaging out of landfill. These are results drawn from more than a decade and a half of customers actually using the refill system, purchase by purchase, not a projection or a future target.

How the refillable makeup system works

When a product runs low, customers keep their existing container and buy a refill sachet, pouch, or pan to reload it. Most refills take under a minute to complete, cost less than buying the full product again, and remove the need for a new outer container each time.

Where Adorn sits as more brands adopt refillable language

As the beauty industry has picked up terms like “circular” and “refillable,” we’ve seen more brands enter this space, and we think that’s a genuinely good outcome for the amount of packaging the industry produces overall. Wider adoption of refill systems, even from brands that started years after us, moves the whole category forward.

At the same time, adopting the language of circular beauty and having a long operating history in it are two different things. We have more than 17 years of refillable practice behind us, a refill count above 221,000, and a full catalogue across both makeup and skincare built around reuse from the ground up. We were the first brand in the world to do this, and we’re still doing it.

What sets Adorn’s refillable range apart

Australian-made and family-owned. Every product is designed and manufactured in Victoria, and the brand is female-founded.

Independently certified. Our formulas are certified toxin-free and allergen-free by Safe Cosmetics Australia, and the range is vegan and cruelty-free.

Formulated for mature and sensitive skin. Our mineral makeup and skincare are built to work with skin as it changes with age, rather than a single skin type or age bracket.

Designed for genuine multi-use. Products are formulated to do more per item, which means customers buy fewer things overall and generate less waste per use.

Backed by a strong customer track record. The range holds a 4.8 out of 5 rating across more than 18,000 reviews, and won the 2025 Power Retail Customer Experience Award.

Why refillable beauty matters for the industry

The global beauty industry generates a significant volume of packaging waste each year, much of it single-use plastic that’s difficult to recycle at scale. Refillable models address that at the source: fewer containers manufactured, fewer shipped, and far fewer ending up in landfill.

Choosing a refillable product means choosing a system designed to deliver the same results with less packaging produced per purchase, which is kinder to skin formulated for sensitivity and kinder to the resources the industry draws on.
