Joined product end-of-life session

The “Product End-of-Life” session brought one of the most urgent conversations of FTWDAY 2025 to the forefront: designing with the end in mind is no longer optional, it’s the foundation of truly sustainable footwear. From life-cycle assessment to circular design strategies and large-scale recycling projects, Paola Migliorini (Contarina S.p.A. Academy), Virgile AYMARD (AIR coop), and David Gambuli (PLASTIC SORT S.R.L.) showed how rethinking a shoe’s final stage can reshape the entire product journey.

Discussed sustainability policies

On 17 November, CTCP - Portuguese Footwear Technological Centre hosted the webinar “European Sustainability Policies Impacting the Footwear Industry” as part of the VETting Green project. The webinar introduced the project and the VETting Green online course, serving as a kick-off for the participants already enrolled. It also highlighted the Policy Brief on Sustainability, one of the project’s first main outcomes.

Worked on circular footwear

We are proud to announce the first fully circular collaboration between PRIMAL | Circular Footwear, combining circular design with consumer recycling. This collaboration embodies the spirit of circularity as together we turn waste into opportunity. Primal Soles stands for maximum comfort, minimal footprint. Their insoles and slippers are made from regenerative cork, memory foam, and recycled materials.

Highlighted supply chain innovation

Trend 2: Sustainability is not optional—it's radical transparency. The EU’s upcoming Ecodesign for Footwear Regulation (2027) demands full disclosure of material origins and recyclability. What we see driving supply chain innovation: Material Revolution: Innovators are testing algae-based foams, mycelium leather, and upcycled ocean plastics. Agile Manufacturing: Utilizing our smart production line in Southern China for localized, agile manufacturing is crucial to reduce emissions, respond to regional demand, and support a circular supply chain.

Prepare for ecodesign rules

The EU’s upcoming Ecodesign for Footwear Regulation (2027) demands full disclosure of material origins and recyclability. The industry must prepare now, making Radical Transparency the only viable supply chain strategy.
