Akuna Swimwear Sustainability Actions

Uses recycled swimwear fabrics

All swimwear fabric in its bikinis, one pieces, rash guards, and board shorts is made from recycled fabrics that contain recycled materials such as plastic bottles that is then turned into polyester fabric. This material is eco-friendly and has chlorine resistant spandex.

Uses plant-based neoprene

In its surf suit, Yulex is used as a neoprene material made from natural rubber harvested from rubber trees. YULEX® Natural Rubber is described as the only renewable and plant-based alternative to petroleum and limestone based neoprene.

Uses sublimation printing

All of its patterned prints and some of its solid colors prints are dye sublimated. The brand says dye-sublimation is the most environmentally friendly, sustainable process possible in garment printing and production, and that it produces zero waste because no water is needed for dyeing.

Produces in small batches

The brand says it produces in very small quantities, and last year it moved to even smaller batch quantities by doing pre-sale. Its goal is not to push product, and only to make product that already has a home. In this way, it does not produce excess.

Encourages longer use

Hakuna Wear says customers should choose something that will function and last. It also says it encourages customers to not buy another swimsuit if they do not need one.

Joined Title Nine pitchfest

Hakuna Wear was chosen to be a part of Title Nine’s Movers and Makers Pitchfest last year and was selected as runners up.
