Apparel Sustainability Actions

Published ESG reports

Apparel Group has published ESG reports for 2021, 2022, and 2023. ESG means environmental, social, and governance, which is a way of tracking how a company affects the planet, people, and how it is run. These reports show that the group has been reporting on its sustainability work for several years, rather than treating it as a one-off update. The 2021 report also said it served as the company’s annual Communication on Progress for the UN Global Compact, which is a UN-backed business initiative on responsible practices.

Cut waste and reuse materials

In 2021, Apparel Group said it recycled large amounts of waste, including cardboard, paper, plastic, and metal. It also upcycled and repurposed unsold merchandise, which means turning old or leftover products into something useful again instead of throwing them away. The company also reported recycling wastewater through an on-site sewage treatment plant. These actions point to a focus on waste reduction and better use of materials inside its operations.

Used solar power at HQ

Apparel Group reported that it generated 3.057 million kWh of solar energy in 2021. kWh means kilowatt-hours, a unit used to measure electricity. It also said that more than 60% of the energy used at its Dubai headquarters came from renewable energy after expanding its solar power system. This shows the company has already taken steps to lower the carbon impact of at least part of its operations.

Joined climate pledge

Apparel UAE was listed among companies that joined the UAE Climate-Responsible Companies Pledge in 2022. The pledge asks companies to measure their carbon footprint, which is the amount of greenhouse gases they cause, and then take steps to reduce it. The same reporting said the pledge supports the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative, a national plan to cut emissions over time. This shows the company has publicly linked itself to wider climate action in the UAE.

Supported workers and communities

The company’s 2021 ESG report said it supported employees and local communities through training, volunteering, donations, and health activities. It reported training hours for staff, volunteer hours from employees, food boxes for workers and families, stationery for students, and support for people with disabilities and special needs. It also said 27% of management roles were held by women and that it employed people from many nationalities. These actions show a wider social focus beyond environmental work.
