Sustainability program in place

CNL has implemented a sustainability program that sets targets for environmental performance, such as carbon emissions, biodiversity protection and waste management. It has also established commitments to nurture a healthy work environment for staff and contractors, to engage meaningfully with stakeholders and with Indigenous Nations, communities, and organizations, and to extend economic opportunities to Indigenous and local businesses.

Annual sustainability reporting

First published in 2021, CNL’s Sustainability Report is produced on an annual basis and provides insight into its ongoing efforts to incorporate sustainability into the operation of all of the sites that it manages on behalf of Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL). A short Executive Summary is also available.

Sustainability strategy established

CNL’s Sustainability Strategy establishes comprehensive goals and metrics to measure performance in areas of highest priority for employees and stakeholders. It builds on previous work, aligns with AECL’s ESG Strategy and the Government of Canada’s Greening Government Strategy, and positions CNL to address evolving requirements and stakeholder expectations around sustainability.

Sustainability Office created

The Sustainability Office serves as a consolidated centre of expertise and advice on corporate sustainability and all things ESG. Led by CNL’s Chief Sustainability Strategy Officer, the office is made up of a small team whose mandate is to advance CNL’s sustainability strategy and reporting, climate action and operational decarbonization, ESG awareness, and the integration of sustainability into CNL’s projects, programs, policies and stakeholder engagements.

Emissions target achieved

In 2025, TransAlta achieved its target of reducing scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 75 per cent from 2015 levels.

Sustainability reporting history

TransAlta has reported on sustainability for over 30 years and its report is subject to third-party assurance to ensure its accuracy.

Diverse generation fleet

TransAlta operates a diverse fleet of natural gas, hydro, wind, solar and battery storage facilities. This diversity enables it to provide reliable and affordable electricity while continuing to invest in non-emitting and lower-carbon opportunities.

Transport Canada strategy published

Transport Canada’s 2023 to 2027 Departmental Sustainable Development Strategy builds on previous strategies and sets out actions in support of the federal strategy. It includes sustainable development initiatives that fall outside the scope of the federal strategy but relate to Canada’s Annual Report on the 2030 Agenda and the UN Sustainable Development Goals.
