AFISC Sustainability Profile

Building a Circular Future

The Australian Furniture Industry Stewardship Council (AFISC) fosters sustainable practices across Australia's furniture and furnishing industry, championing a circular economy model that prioritises product durability, reuse, repair, recyclability, and low-impact materials. Developed through research initiated by the Australian Furniture Association (AFA), AFISC works across the furnishing lifecycle to support circular design, responsible sourcing, product transparency, recovery pathways, and circular procurement practices. Adopting initiatives such as the development of FurnitureDNA, a digital product passport system for furniture, AFISC supports greater visibility of material composition, sustainability certifications, chemicals of concern, repairability, and recovery pathways across the furniture supply chain. With increasing focus on sustainable procurement, product transparency, and circular economy outcomes, AFISC supports industry and procurement stakeholders with practical guidance, collaboration, and tools aligned with evolving policy expectations. Up to 30,000 tonnes of commercial furniture is discarded annually. An estimated 95% is sent to landfill. AFISC exists to help drive industry transformation towards more circular and responsible outcomes.

AFISC Sustainability Actions

Product Transparency and Digital Traceability

AFISC is developing the FurnitureDNA – an industry-led digital product passport system designed to improve transparency across the furnishing supply chain. The platform helps manufacturers and retailers access and share verified sustainability information, supporting informed decision-making, evolving policy expectations, and growing demand for product-level transparency. FurnitureDNA is intended to strengthen transparency, accountability, and circular economy outcomes across the furniture lifecycle.

Formed Inaugural AFISC Champions Industry Advisory Group

In December 2025, AFISC launched its inaugural Industry Advisory Group - known as AFISC Champions - bringing together manufacturers, designers, sustainability experts, certification bodies, and supply-chain leaders to guide the council's strategic priorities. Champions contribute across six Working Groups: Digital Product Passport, Chemicals of Concern, Designing Out Waste, Standards and Compliance, Ethical Sourcing and Chain of Custody, and Circular Procurement and Market Activation. This structure ensures AFISC develops practical, credible tools for businesses of all sizes across Australia's furnishing sector.

Strategic Partnerships supporting Independent Certification, Verification and Transparency

AFISC has established strategic partnership and collaborative relationships with recognised certification and verification organisations including, GECA, Global Green Tag International, Furntech-AFRDI and Rebuilt- to support furniture industry businesses in obtaining independent certification and meeting sustainable procurement expectations. Under these agreements, AFISC members benefit from improved access to certification pathways, lifecycle assessment tools, and product carbon verification at preferential rates, supporting their sustainability and circularity goals. These partnerships help businesses strengthen credibility, support evidence-based environmental claims, reduce greenwashing risk, and improve alignment with emerging environmental policies and initiatives.

Local Government Engagement Program

AFISC has launched a structured engagement program with local governments across Australia, recognising councils as critical partners in circular procurement, furniture recovery and end-of-life stewardship. To support participation, AFISC is offering local government agencies a complimentary 12-month membership, helping foster collaboration between councils, industry, and recovery partners. This initiative supports a more nationally coordinated approach to furniture end-of-life, helping connect procurement decisions with practical reuse, repair and recovery solutions.

Eliminating Chemicals of Concern including PFAS

A core AFISC priority is identifying and eliminating chemicals of concern - including PFAS - from Australia's furnishing supply chain. Through its dedicated Chemicals of Concern Working Group and the FPAS chemical transparency module, AFISC enables manufacturers and retailers to track, disclose, and phase out hazardous substances. This work protects human health, reduces environmental contamination risk, and prepares industry for emerging domestic and international chemical safety regulations.
