APCO Sustainability Actions

National Packaging Targets

APCO says the National Packaging Targets were established in 2018 to guide how Australia manages packaging waste. These targets set a shared direction for industry and government, with the aim of making packaging easier to recover and reuse. In plain terms, they are a roadmap for moving packaging away from landfill and toward a more circular system, where materials stay in use for longer.

Australasian Recycling Label

APCO runs the Australasian Recycling Label, or ARL, which gives people simple on-pack recycling instructions. The label is meant to reduce confusion, save time, and cut down on contamination in recycling bins. Contamination means putting the wrong item in the recycling stream, which can make whole loads harder to recycle. This is a practical action that helps consumers sort packaging more correctly.

ARL Marketplace support

APCO has created the ARL Marketplace, which offers free learning resources for small businesses and a directory for eligible packaging suppliers. This helps businesses find packaging options and learn about more sustainable packaging choices. The page shows APCO using education and market access to push better packaging decisions across the supply chain, which is the path materials take from maker to customer.

Packaging consultation work

APCO is consulting on an industry-led extended producer responsibility, or EPR, approach for packaging in Australia. EPR means producers take more responsibility for the waste their packaging creates. APCO says it wants the approach to be fair, reasonable, and achievable. This shows the organisation is involved in shaping future packaging rules, not just describing them.

Industry coordination role

APCO says it works with more than 2,300 members and signatories across many sectors. It also describes itself as Australia’s co-regulator for packaging in the Food & Drink Business article. That means it helps coordinate industry action on packaging targets, recycling labels, and sustainable packaging guidelines. This is a governance role that supports wider packaging reform.
