Bags N Boots Sustainability Actions

Published ESG reporting

The Boots Group says it published an ESG Report 2025 and a Technical ESG Report 2025. It says the technical report includes detailed performance data, governance disclosures, and alignment with reporting frameworks such as GRI (Global Reporting Initiative, a common way to report sustainability data), SASB (industry-focused reporting standards), and TCFD (climate-risk disclosure guidance). The report was also said to be assured on a limited basis by Deloitte, which means an outside firm checked some of the data but not everything.

Cut operational emissions

Boots says it has reduced Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 37.1% since a 2019 baseline. Scope 1 covers direct emissions from things the company owns or controls, while Scope 2 covers emissions from purchased energy like electricity. The company also says it is working on energy efficiency through LED lighting, fridge doors, and building management systems. It is a signatory to the British Retail Consortium’s Retail Climate Action Plan, which sets a retail industry path toward net zero by 2040.

Expanded recycling schemes

Boots says its Recycle at Boots scheme is available in 800 stores and helps customers recycle health and wellness products that are hard to recycle at home. The company says the scheme has diverted more than 11 million hard-to-recycle items from landfill. It also says it was the first retailer to use Scan2Recycle technology, which gives customers recycling information and lets them track the impact of what they return. Boots also offers battery recycling and accepts waste electricals under WEEE rules, which are the UK rules for waste electrical and electronic equipment.

Improved packaging labels

The Boots Group says more than 2,600 items from its owned brands now carry the On-Pack Recycling Label, or OPRL, which helps shoppers understand how to recycle packaging correctly. It also says its reusable, unbleached paper carrier bags are 100% recyclable. In older press coverage, Boots said it planned to replace plastic bags with brown paper carriers to cut single-use plastic. These steps point to a focus on clearer recycling information and lower-waste packaging.

Responsible sourcing rules

Boots says it requires suppliers to meet its Global Minimum Requirements for Product Sustainability. It says suppliers must submit declarations for every component of every product, and that it checks factories against its supplier code of conduct and ethical trading standard. The company also says it has set sourcing rules for certified sustainable forest products, RSPO-certified palm oil, and cotton that must not come from the Xinjiang region of China. RSPO is a certification for more responsible palm oil production.

Donated to communities

The Boots Group says it gave £53 million to communities over the last 10 years through donations, fundraising, and volunteering. It also says it raised £23 million for Macmillan Cancer Support over 16 years and €4 million for the Irish Cancer Society over 14 years. In addition, it says it has donated 1.7 million products to The Hygiene Bank, which helps tackle hygiene poverty. These actions sit under its healthy communities pillar and show a strong focus on local health and social support.
