BehaviorSMART Sustainability Actions

First Mile sustainability approach

Behavior change can power smart progress towards sustainability that is efficient, low-investment and enables the later efforts. Focusing on the first mile of the journey makes operations smarter and more efficient but it also sets solid foundations…

Tourism events across continents

These two months, Milena S. Nikolova, PhD, Gergana Nikolova and Saba Kauser will be part of travel trade events across three continents, working with the doers, movers, and decision-makers who are actively redefining the future of tourism. At Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) in Phuket, Thailand, the focus is how behavioral science can significantly reduce food waste across tourism operations. In Yukon, Canada, the session “Smarter Tourism Starts with Better Decisions” explores how simple changes in choice design can influence visitor behavior.

Care for the Arctic work

In Rovaniemi, Finland, we will be closing the loop on our Care for the Arctic work - turning insights into actionable pathways for long-term, system-wide change.

Work with tourism partners

Over the past year, our work has taken us from mountain valleys to innovation hubs, from remote islands to polar regions, each destination revealing new ways to make responsible travel the easiest choice. In the Faroe Islands, we worked hand in hand with leading researchers to experiment with how reframing success leads to new decisions. The COSME “First Mile” project provided us with rich and solid evidence that smart and targeted tactics that shift guest behavior can be game-changing for the footprint of tourism companies. With Royal Enfield, we continue to explore how big brands can employ behavioral design and shift norms among large consumer audiences.

Newsletter on sustainable travel

Our monthly newsletter gives you: Insights you can act on, the “why” behind traveler choices, and ways to build smarter systems. It is curated for tourism professionals who believe sustainability should be smart, simple, and science-based.
