Switched to renewable electricity

Blackmores says it moved all Australian-operated facilities to 100% renewable electricity from January 2024. It also says this was supported by a long-term renewable power buying deal for its Braeside manufacturing site. The company links this to its wider plan to cut emissions and says it also upgraded equipment such as air-handling units, LED lighting, and energy monitoring systems to use less power.

Cut emissions and waste

Blackmores says its Group emissions fell by 38% and manufacturing emissions fell by 48% compared with the prior year. It also says waste efficiency improved by 6%, with waste per 1,000 units sold dropping from 39 kilograms to 37 kilograms. On site, 69% of waste was diverted from landfill through sorting and recovery. These are operational changes, not future promises, and they show the company trying to shrink its footprint in day-to-day production.

Improved packaging recovery

Blackmores says 80% of its packaging footprint is designed for end-of-life recovery, meaning it is made so materials can be recovered, recycled, or reused after use. It says glass bottles now contain up to 30% post-consumer recycled glass, steel cans contain 15% recycled content, and its Australian corrugated board contains more than 80% post-consumer recycled material. More than half of its shippers are made from 100% recycled content.

Set supply chain worker rules

Blackmores says it has five principles for protecting people in its supply chain: freedom, fair pay, good working conditions, health and safety, and the right to be heard. It says it uses supplier assessments and audits to look for problems and to support fixes where needed. This is its way of dealing with labour risks such as modern slavery, which means severe exploitation of workers.

Studied fish oil sourcing risks

Blackmores says it worked with environmental specialists Pollination to study the Peruvian anchoveta fishery, which supplies anchovies used in some fish oil products. The study looked at climate shifts, fishing pressure, and where the biggest emissions happen in the supply chain. Blackmores says the findings are helping it support responsible fishing, conservation work, and the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification process, which is a standard for more sustainable fishing.

Published an early sustainability report

Blackmores published an inaugural sustainability report for the financial year ending June 2016. It says the report followed GRI G4 guidelines from the Global Reporting Initiative, a framework for reporting environmental and social impacts, and ESG guidance for Australian companies. The report also says Deloitte gave independent assurance of the data, which means an outside auditor checked the numbers for accuracy.

Joined packaging sector work

Blackmores says it is a founding member of the Australian Packaging Covenant Organisation, or APCO, which works with companies to improve packaging design and recycling. The company says it collaborates across the sector to make therapeutic-goods packaging more sustainable and to improve recovery and reuse of materials.
