Bonsucro Sustainability Actions

Set standards and tools

Bonsucro sets standards and provides practical tools, projects and funding to support producers, mills and buyers to measure and reduce emissions, build resilience, improve worker health and drive innovation in sustainable sugarcane production.

Climate action initiatives

Bonsucro’s Climate Action initiatives focus on setting standards, empowering action through the Bonsucro Calculator and ClimateCane Tracker, driving systemic change through the Bonsucro Impact Fund, and supporting cross-commodity collaboration across the industry.

Introduced voluntary GHG module

The voluntary GHG module in ChoC v5.2, which enables the transfer of independently verified greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions data along the supply chain, has already been introduced.

Supported smallholder project

The Impulsa project, led by Solidaridad with co-leads Raízen and Koppert and local partners Alur and Cenicaña, ran from November 2022 to October 2024 to increase the uptake of sustainable practices in small-scale sugarcane production in line with Bonsucro’s Production Standard for Smallholders.

Ran incentives and rewards pilot

The project used the Farming Solution app to record and share farming practices, and tied it to an incentives and rewards mechanism so farmers could earn and exchange engagement points for services and get compensated for their efforts.

Recognised certification impacts

Some key achievements of Bonsucro-certified producers include a 14% reduction in GHG emissions after five years of certification, an average of 8.65 additional tonnes of sugarcane per hectare, and a 42% reduction in water consumption after five years of certification.

Aligned with EU renewable rules

The Bonsucro standard is approved by the European Commission to meet sustainability requirements under the European Renewable Energy Directive, and Bonsucro’s EU-RED III Standard aligns with the EU Union Database for Biofuels.
