Booted Out Sustainability Actions

Uses energy management systems

Messe Düsseldorf says it has used an ISO 50001-certified energy management system since 2014. ISO 50001 is an international standard for managing energy use. The company says this has helped it cut energy use and lower the environmental impact of its events. It also says that, compared with 2011, it has reduced annual Scope 1 and 2 carbon emissions by about 19,500 tons. Scope 1 and 2 are the emissions it creates directly and from purchased energy.

Runs events on green electricity

The company says its whole site, including exhibitor stands, runs on green electricity. It also says it produces about 550,000 kilowatt hours of power each year through three photovoltaic systems, which are solar panels that turn sunlight into electricity. It is also checking whether it can add more roof-mounted solar panels. These steps are meant to reduce the energy use and climate impact of its trade fairs.

Cuts waste and resource use

Boot Düsseldorf says it avoids aisle carpets where possible, reuses system stands and other booth parts, and uses local service partners to reduce transport needs. It also uses electric cars and electric cargo bikes for travel around Düsseldorf and the fairgrounds. In catering, it prefers regional food and plans orders to reduce food waste. The company also provides waste bins and collection points so visitors and exhibitors can sort waste more easily.

Promotes ocean protection

Since 2017, boot Düsseldorf and the German Ocean Foundation have run the 'ocean tribute' award. The award gives €20,000 to people, projects, and groups that protect seas, lakes, and rivers with practical ideas. The company says the prize has become one of the better-known international awards in marine conservation. This is a public action tied to ocean protection rather than a product change.

Hosts ocean awareness initiatives

The Love Your Ocean initiative, run with the German Ocean Foundation, brings together industry, science, and the public to talk about ocean and climate protection. The event stand includes live labs, ghost net recovery demos, and exhibits made from marine debris, which is waste found in the sea. The company says the goal is to raise awareness and show practical ways to protect the ocean.

Created a sustainability forum

The blue innovation dock is described as boot Düsseldorf’s sustainability forum for 2026. It is a networking platform for politics and industry focused on making boat building, propulsion, marina management, and tourism more sustainable. The event brings in speakers, a moderator, and a specialist audience to share ideas and discuss change in the marine sector.

Donates leftover goods

Messe Düsseldorf works with Tafel Düsseldorf e.V., a local food bank group, to collect leftover food, giveaways, and other goods from stands after the fair. These items can then be passed on to people affected by poverty in Düsseldorf and nearby areas, as long as the group has enough space to store them. This helps reduce waste and supports local social needs.
