Brighton Sustainability Actions

Signed climate action framework

Brighton & Hove Albion says it has signed up to the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Sports for Climate Action Framework, which commits the club to halving its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero by 2040.

Launched MyAlbion, MyPlanet

The club says its sustainability strategy, ‘MyAlbion, MyPlanet’, sets out how it will reduce the club’s environmental impacts, as well as using its position in football to promote environmental responsibility and support staff, fans and communities to live healthier more sustainable lives.

Venue waste and energy measures

The Brighton Centre says it has an multi-award winning waste management company, Recorra, operating all venue waste and recycling, LED lighting throughout the venue, water-saving systems in the toilets, energy purchased from a range of renewable technologies across the UK only, modern technology to reduce gas usage on hot water and heating, water fountains throughout the venue, carpet floor tiles, and recycling encouraged in all areas throughout the venue.

Food and catering changes

The Brighton Centre says its contracted caterers, Seasoned, are looking further into food offerings onsite to ensure more vegan and local options. It says there are no plastic straws onsite and no drinks sold in single use plastic bottles, wooden cutlery, palm leaf and cardboard food containers are used, beef is off the menus, and ‘meat free Mondays’ operate. It also says cooking oil is collected and recycled and food waste is recycled into compost material and biogas.

Water and food donation work

The Brighton Centre says it works with local homeless charities including Fareshare, to which it donates excess produce to avoid waste. It also says its water supplier is Life Water UK and that, through sales of water at the venue, two water wells have been built in villages in a third world country.

Sustainability Advisory Board

The City of Brighton says City Council unanimously voted to create Brighton’s first Sustainability Advisory Board. The board members were sworn in to help guide the City’s sustainability, climate action and community resilience efforts, and to study, review, conduct research and make recommendations to support science and evidence-based programs and policies.
