Founded in corporate sustainability

Brightworks Sustainability was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 2001 by Scott Lewis. It was one of the first-ever corporate sustainability advisory firms in the United States, serving what would later become a global market for services related to sustainability transition in enterprises.

Implemented ISO 14001 EMS

At Schnitzer Steel, Scott Lewis had led implementation of an ISO 14001 Environmental Management System (EMS) for the steel giant. While implementing this EMS as part of Schnitzer Steel’s pioneering sustainability program, he founded Brightworks.

Created campus sustainability plan

Using tools like ISO 14001 and conceptual frameworks like The Natural Step, significant early work by Brightworks included the first-ever campus sustainability plan for the University of California, Santa Barbara, still the highest-ranking UC campus on sustainability measures tracked by the UC Office of the President.

Expanded into green building

Brightworks added architects, engineers, and energy experts to its team and diversified into two practice areas: corporate sustainability and green building. The firm connected its green building work to its corporate sustainability work, developing services for clients seeking action at the program level, the portfolio level, the enterprise level, and the building or asset level.

Acquired by leadership team

In 2015, Scott Lewis sold Brightworks to the firm’s leadership team at the time — Heath Blount, Christopher Forney, Joshua Hatch, and Brandon G. Sprague — who formally acquired Brightworks on July 1, 2015.

Supports iMasons Climate Accord

In April 2022, iMasons launched the iMasons Climate Accord (ICA), an industry initiative to transform the data center industry toward net-zero carbon. Brightworks team members provide staff augmentation to the organization, convene stakeholders, establish and manage day-to-day operations and special programs, and facilitate all working groups, including the governing body.

Designed Ashland climate measures

For the Ashland School District school bond-funded facilities program, Brightworks designed project-specific energy efficiency and sustainability measures to align with the City of Ashland’s Climate and Energy Action Plan (CEAP). The project took advantage of Energy Trust of Oregon and City of Ashland incentives for building energy analysis and natural gas energy savings, and the City of Ashland water department provided incentives for low-flow plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems upgrades.

Managed LEED and Living Building

Brightworks managed LEED for Homes Gold certification for The Nick Fish Affordable Housing project and successfully managed the process of achieving the Living Building Challenge Materials Petal for PAE’s flagship headquarters, working with engineer PAE, developer Edlen & Co., and ZGF Architects.

Conducted portfolio assessments

Across 17 states, Brightworks conducted sustainability assessments on more than 50 buildings in ABB’s North American portfolio, including manufacturing, office, and warehousing facilities. An extensive report provided a baseline assessment for each site to help ABB prioritize energy efficiency measures, budget for carbon reduction efforts, and calculate ROI as part of its GreenCRREM program.
