Business West’s sustainability-related content focuses on ESG, social value, skills, and inclusive growth across the West of England. Through the Bristol Initiative and wider chamber activity, it convenes business leaders to discuss environmental, social and governance issues, including carbon reduction, social impact, responsible business practice, and the role of skills and education in supporting a fairer economy. It also works with local partners on programmes aimed at young people, recruitment, and technical training. The content shows an emphasis on practical business support, regional collaboration, and helping members respond to sustainability expectations in operations, supply chains, and workforce development.

Hosted ESG roundtable

Last week, business leaders from the Bristol Initiative membership came together to discuss ESG – Environmental, Social and Governance. We were kindly hosted by Initiative member and leading UK law firm Burges Salmon at its fantastic offices in Temple Quarter. Also present were business leaders from The Bristol Port, Hargreaves Lansdown, GWR, EDF, The Grand Appeal, JLL, Babbasa, Socius, Arcadis and Stride Treglown.

Joined sustainable growth coalition

In 2023, Business West joined forces with five leading regional business organisations to form this powerful coalition, aimed at driving sustainable, inclusive, and transformational growth across the UK. For Bristol, this means a stronger voice for the South West on the national stage, collaboration with other regions to share best practices and unlock new opportunities, a focus on sustainable and inclusive growth that benefits all communities, and influence on national policy.

Led skills and education roundtable

Last week in the heart of the city at the Bristol Training Institute, the Bristol Initiative held a roundtable discussion with members on the topic of skills and education, hosted by our Initiative Member, Weston College. Several members noted that a strong social and ESG record for a business was incredibly important, with multiple candidates asking tough questions about social value and environmental impact even at the interview stage.

Led LSIP work

You might also benefit from taking a look at our work on Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIPs). LSIPs are a crucial part of the government’s blueprint for reshaping the technical skills system to better meet the needs of employers and the wider economy. The West of England LSIP is led by Business West and funded by the Department for Education. We bring together employers, education, and training providers and other local stakeholders to set out the key priorities and changes needed in the area to ensure post-16 technical education and training prepares employees better for work.

Supported Our City 2030

Matt from Babbasa introduced the roundtable to the Our City 2030 programme, which he and Babbasa are heavily involved in. The programme is working with Business West and the Bristol City Office and aims to support young people from low income households, starting from inner city Bristol, to secure a median salary role by 2030.
