Cleanaway Waste Management Sustainability Actions

Runs a circular economy model

Cleanaway says it helps businesses, councils, and communities turn waste into resources. It works across collection, recycling, treatment, and disposal, and says it uses its network of sites to recover materials and keep them in use for longer. The company links this work to Australia’s circular economy, which means reusing and recycling materials instead of sending them to landfill. It also says it invests in new technology to recover more waste streams and reduce the amount that is lost.

Recovers materials from waste

The company says it collects and recovers materials such as PET plastic, glass, cardboard, aluminium, and food and garden organics. It also says it helps divert these materials away from landfill so they can be recycled, composted, or turned into energy or new products. Cleanaway says it works with partners to turn recovered materials into usable products, including food-grade recycled plastic and plastic resins that can replace virgin resin, which is new plastic made from raw materials.

Improves environmental controls

Cleanaway says it uses licensed and compliant operations and applies environmental standards across its sites and services. It says it has invested in fire detection, risk reduction projects at high-risk facilities, and runoff management to stop polluted water from entering drains or rivers. The company also says it uses health, safety, and environment systems, including a strategy, a critical risk program, and environment guidance, to keep reviewing and improving how it manages environmental risks.

Trials lower-carbon fleet options

Cleanaway says it is working to cut emissions from its transport fleet. In 2024, it partnered with Viva Energy on a HVO100 demonstration, using renewable fuel made from hydrotreated vegetable oil, which is a processed plant-based fuel. It also ran a hydrogen truck trial to see how hydrogen vehicles perform in real work settings. The company says it is also using digital route planners and data tools to reduce fuel use and improve fleet efficiency.

Introduced HSE strategy

In 2023, Cleanaway introduced a five-year Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) strategy and roadmap, along with an HSE Culture Framework. HSE means health, safety, and environment. The company says these tools are meant to improve safety and environmental performance across the business. It also says its guiding principle of keeping each other safe covers physical, psychological, and process safety, as well as environmental protection.
