Trained girls in coding

Vodacom launched a follow-up to its #CodeLikeAGirl programme that saw 700 girls between the ages of 14 and 18 receive coding training from 27 June to 15 July 2022. The programme was aimed at inspiring more girls to explore careers that require coding skills and to help them get a start in STEM fields and industries.

Supported scholarship students

Code Like a Girl reported 519 students enrolled in courses, with 18.5% being scholarship students. It also said it had placed 195 women in paid internships and had 867 women in its online community.

Placed women in internships

The organisation said it had placed women in paid internships and that its internship programme had helped participants move into tech roles. One former intern said she owed much of her software career to Code Like a Girl’s internship programme and the experience gained in the internship.

Ran bootcamps in South Africa

The programme was delivered through 5-Day Coding Bootcamps using a hybrid model for on-site and virtual participants. The on-site bootcamps were hosted at 39 Vodacom School of Excellences in all nine provinces of South Africa, and the virtual bootcamps were accessible to girls from anywhere in the country.

Expanded STEM training

The programme was first implemented in South Africa, Mozambique, Tanzania, DRC and Lesotho in 2017. In South Africa alone, Vodacom said it had trained 2,332 girls since launch, with over 1,000 pupils from eight provinces taking part in 2021.
