Typical ULT freezers can use as much energy as a house—simply tuning it from 80 to -70C can reduce their energy consumption by a third. These are simple actions that are straightforward to measure and low cost that can have a significant carbon and cost reduction benefit.

Manage cold storage better

Good cold storage practices can significantly reduce energy consumption. The guidance includes keeping the door and gaskets in the freezer free of ice, maintaining a good inventory of freezer contents, removing unwanted samples, reducing the volume of stored samples, using high-capacity boxes, and filling empty spaces in the freezer with ice packs of Styrofoam boxes/lids.
