Comvita Limited Sustainability Actions

Planted Mānuka forests

Since 2017, Comvita has planted over 7 million native Mānuka trees across the North Island, converting unproductive farmland back into thriving native forests. As one of New Zealand's largest private native foresters, it has planted over 7 million Mānuka seedlings, covering 6,628 hectares across the North Island, providing a habitat for bees and nature to thrive.

Sequestered carbon

Comvita says its Mānuka forests have cumulatively removed over 131,228 tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere since the start of its regeneration programme in 2017. It also states that during 2025 alone, Comvita-planted and managed trees removed more than 20,145 tonnes of carbon.

Monitored ecological impact

Comvita partnered with Plant & Food Research to develop a bespoke science-based Ecological Impact Monitoring (EIM) Tool and an Ecological Improvement Monitoring Program. The program assesses freshwater stream health, tree size, insects, pests, birds and bats at the same sites every year, and was initiated in the summer of 2023/24.

Protected kiwi habitat

Comvita has activated its kiwi protection programme at Blue Sky station to support a safe habitat for kiwi, with over 110 predator traps already in place. It also manages deer, pig and goat numbers across its forests, and says this is critical for the establishment of native forest.

Worked with conservation partners

Since 2021, Comvita has partnered with Save the Kiwi to support kiwi conservation. Through the partnership it supports predator management, advocacy, research, kiwi relocation and egg incubation, and says it also actively participates in conservation in its own forests.
