Launched the DUCA Impact Lab

Doug Conick conceived and championed the creation of the DUCA Impact Lab, a separate charitable organization designed to research, pilot, and launch new approaches to banking and finance for positive social impact.

Funded Escalator Loan pilot

In 2023, the Escalator Loan pilot operated in the DUCA Impact Lab, funded its 100th loan and crossed the $500K threshold in total lending. That is one hundred individuals who are out of the predatory debt cycle and achieving greater financial stability.

Gave philanthropic support

Coupled with DUCA's philanthropic giving of $4.2 million since 2014, our cumulative giving now stands at $5.6 million as of the year-ended 2023.

Partnered on Indigenous training

DUCA partnered with the Native Canadian Centre of Toronto (NCCT) to sponsor the Aboriginal BEST (Business and Entrepreneurship Skills Training) program through the Indigenous Marketplace Program. This initiative aims to bolster Indigenous economic presence in Toronto by providing small business training and growth support.

Strengthened DEI feedback

2023 witnessed a range of initiatives to strengthen feedback processes to foster open dialogue and ensure we continue our diversity, equity and inclusion progress, using both informal and formal channels.

Completed United merger

Prior to year-end, DUCA closed an agreement for the merger of operations with United Employees Credit Union (United) with the transaction adding $53 million of on-balance sheet assets and over 3,000 Members.

Expanded Escalator Loan work

By the end of 2024, the Escalator Loan program had refinanced over $740,000 in predatory loans to date, helping hand over 115 people a lifeline out of a predatory debt cycle.

Partnered with credit unions

We are also pleased to have partnered with Kindred Credit Union and Your Neighbourhood Credit Union to help grow this initiative and expand its availability.
