Adopted Community Sustainability Element

The City of Edmonds Comprehensive Plan contains a number of different elements, some mandated by the Growth Management Act, and others included because they are important to our community. Edmonds adopted a Community Sustainability Element to provide a framework tying the other plan elements together, illustrating how the overall plan direction supports sustainability within the Edmonds community. This approach directly links long-term planning and shorter-term strategic planning and policy review, which guide the use of city resources and programs, especially budgeting.

Promoted local business support

Ed! has been working hard to support downtown business community, and supporting and promoting local is the reason Ed! exists. The organization says it ensures downtown stays lively, attractive, prosperous and welcoming to everyone. Its programs include green courtesy umbrellas, bike racks, creative crosswalks and support of public art such as the murals.

Partnered on downtown campaigns

Ed! partnered with the City of Edmonds to create a cohesive look and feel for downtown Edmonds, and it will be used in conjunction with several fun activities. Ed! also partnered with local businesses with parking lots available to use after hours and has provided clear signage to mark when they’re available. Currently Sound Credit Union, US Bank and Washington Federal have participated.

Highlighted earth-conscious businesses

An Earth Month feature listed many downtown Edmonds businesses with sustainable practices, including resale, used books, composting, seasonal menus, upcycling, and bring-your-own-vessel rewards. The article also noted Ridwell’s mission to empower individuals, families, and communities to build a less wasteful future by making it easy to reuse and recycle their stuff sustainably.

Planned community service day

On Saturday, April 20, several local groups, including The City of Edmonds, The Edmonds Stewards, The Edmonds Tree Board, Sound Salmon Solutions, and other community volunteers, will come together for a day of service. The planned activities include planting trees, restoring habitats, and cleaning up beaches.
