Ermenegildo Zegna Sustainability Actions

Published ESG reporting

Zegna published its first SASB-aligned sustainability report in 2022. SASB (the Sustainability Accounting Standards Board) is a reporting framework that helps companies share the ESG topics most relevant to their business. The company had already published a 2020 sustainability report before that. This suggests it had started reporting on environmental and social issues before its ESG strategy was fully formalised. The reporting move was part of a wider effort to improve transparency for investors and other stakeholders.

Set up ESG governance

Zegna formally created a Governance and Sustainability Committee to monitor, evaluate, and report on its sustainability policies and practices. It also said its ESG commitments would be overseen by the board of directors, and executive incentive plans would be linked to those targets. This means sustainability was moved into formal company oversight rather than left as a side project. The company also worked with Quantis to build an integrated sustainability strategy and disclosure plan.

Started action on key issues

Zegna said it had already launched three work streams on vendor management, water impacts, and animal welfare. It also set up a task force to build a stronger vendor management system, which is a way of tracking and managing supplier risks. Another task force began work on measuring water use in owned sites and in the supply chain, and on assessing climate-related water risk. These steps show the company moving from broad goals to specific operational work.

Worked on materiality and strategy

With Quantis, Zegna carried out a materiality assessment, which is a process for finding the ESG issues that matter most to the business and its stakeholders. The work involved interviews with more than 180 people, including senior leaders, NGOs, suppliers, customers, and universities. Quantis then translated the findings into 85 short-, medium-, and long-term ESG actions. The priorities focused on climate, biodiversity, ecodesign, and circular business models, which aim to keep materials in use for longer.

Joined industry efforts

A Zegna sustainability leader said the group contributes to industry-wide work such as the Fashion Pact’s renewable energy and cotton in-setting programs, and the Re.Crea Consortium for post-consumer circularity. The Fashion Pact is a business coalition focused on climate, biodiversity, and oceans. In-setting means reducing emissions within the company’s own value chain rather than buying offsets elsewhere. Re.Crea works on circularity, which means keeping products and materials in use instead of throwing them away.
