Paperless Ticketing
Firefly Express has transitioned to a fully electronic ticketing system, eliminating the need for paper tickets and significantly reducing paper waste across its operations. By moving to digital tickets, the business has streamlined the customer experience while lowering its environmental footprint through reduced printing, distribution, and administrative waste. This shift supports more efficient operations and reflects a practical commitment to reducing unnecessary resource use.
At present, Firefly Express does not have formal sustainability or emissions reporting in place. However, the business has taken practical, meaningful steps that support sustainable transport outcomes, particularly through ongoing fleet upgrades and efficiency-driven scheduling practices.
These commitments are:
No-Empty-Seat Operating Philosophy – Firefly Express aims to ensure that coaches do not travel with unnecessary empty capacity.
Network planning, advance bookings, and schedule adjustments are used to maximise seat utilisation and avoid inefficient vehicle movements.
• Scheduling Efficiency – Routes are planned to minimise dead-running (unpaid kilometres) wherever possible.
• Fuel-efficient driving standards – Drivers are trained to operate coaches smoothly and economically.
• Learnings from V/Line tender processes – As documented in the V/Line compliance material, Firefly Express has adopted operational practices that improve fuel management, minimise idle time, and reduce unnecessary vehicle movements.
. Firefly Express also maintains a clear fleet modernisation strategy that directly supports emissions reduction and fuel efficiency:
Fleet Replacement Program – Coaches are replaced on a rolling basis to ensure the fleet stays between 5–10 years old, with an organisational goal to reduce this range further to 5–7 years.
High Emission Standards – 90% of the fleet currently operates under Euro V emission standards and the remaining 10% meet the latest Euro VI standards, delivering lower particulate and NOx emissions.
Continuous Investment – Firefly Express is proactively transitioning towards a younger, cleaner fleet as part of its long-term sustainability and customer-experience strategy.
