Published integrated climate and nature report

In 2025, First Sentier Group published its inaugural integrated Climate and Nature Report. The report was described as an important milestone in its responsible investment journey and was borne out of a strategic decision to reflect the interconnectedness of climate and nature in its investment approach. The group said it had reported in line with Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures recommendations since 2017 and became a Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures adopter in 2024.

Created nature and biodiversity toolkit

In 2022, First Sentier Investors convened a Nature and Biodiversity Working Group, comprised of members from nine of its 15 investment teams. A key output was the delivery of a Nature and Biodiversity Toolkit launched in 2023, which provides a framework for assessing and engaging with investee companies on nature-related issues. In 2023, it also launched a guide, Investors Can Assess Nature Now (ICANN), to help investors identify and assess materiality, exposure and responses to nature-related issues.

Joined TNFD Adopters list

Following the release of the Investors Can Assess Nature Now guide in 2023, First Sentier Investors continued its biodiversity work in 2024 by joining the list of TNFD Adopters in October, as announced at the Nature Positive Summit hosted by the Australian government. The group said a core focus for 2024 was supporting investment teams in implementing its nature and biodiversity toolkit to prioritise sectors and companies, assess water and deforestation risks, and develop engagement plans.

Commissioned SHF supply chain research

In 2021, Stewart Investors commissioned research which identified 14 key sustainability issues faced by smallholder farmer supply chains. The content says that ensuring active investor engagement to seek deeper insight into production and distribution-related activities is vital, and that programs in operation include training and education in agronomic practices, financial management, traceability and reducing child labour.

Set nature initiation targets

As a signatory to the Finance for Biodiversity Pledge, First Sentier Investors has set three types of Initiation Targets relating to governance, assessment and training. The targets are supported by implementation plans and a disclosure plan. The governance target says that by the end of 2025, the firm will disclose a clear firm-wide governance structure for nature. The assessment target says that by the end of 2025, a dependencies, impacts, risks and opportunities assessment for in-scope investments will be conducted and publicly disclosed.

Uses responsible investment frameworks

The investment manager says the Funds will invest in companies that contribute to, and benefit from, sustainable development, and that contribution is assessed by reference to human development pillars and climate solutions. The human development pillars include health and well-being, physical infrastructure, economic welfare, and opportunity and empowerment. Positive environmental outcomes are assessed by reference to climate solutions developed by Project Drawdown, including food systems, energy, circular economy and industries, transport, buildings, water, and conservation and restoration.
