Frank Wild – Event Management Sustainability Actions

Leadership in Sustainability

We aim to further ourselves as a leader in sustainability by achieving key milestones in certification, transparency, carbon neutrality, and strategic goal-setting - enhancing our commitment to social and environmental impact. Sustainable design process: We have developed a sustainable design process that includes collaborative goal setting with clients, development of a sustainability action plan, measurement of our emissions using our custom built and third party verified carbon calculator, and production of an impact report. Custom events emissions calculator: In 2019 we developed our own carbon emissions calculator specific to the events industry, and since 2020 the impact of every project we have produced has been measured. This year our calculator underwent a third-party verification (TPV), which means Pangolin Associates, an independent sustainability consultant, reviewed and ensured its accuracy. Responsibility Report: While the first one officially published, our Responsibility Report celebrates the past 10 years of Frank Wild and has been established to set a baseline for the next 10 years and beyond. The report includes an overview of our approach within the world of events, our successes as well as our blind spots, and the measured impact we’ve had on the planet over the course of the past year (July 1 2023 - June 30 2024). It also outlines our focus for 2025 and long term vision for the future. You can view the report on the evidence tab of our Sustainability Tracker profile.

Sustainable choices

Our sustainable guiding principles shape all aspects of how we work, starting from the creative process and procurement, to onsite delivery of a project. We use these principles to inform our day-to-day choices and actions to ensure we hold ourselves to the highest possible standard. United Nations Sustainable Development Goals: Although our operations and projects are mainly based throughout Australia, we align our choices with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to allow us to make meaningful contributions to a collective global effort to combat economic, social and environmental challenges. The events industry has a large impact on many of the goals, yet they also present the greatest opportunities for innovation, collaboration and positive influence. Materials decision matrix: To help us better evaluate all aspects of a material and make informed choices about its use, we have developed a materials decision matrix for all new and existing materials. We review what it is made from (i.e recycled materials), where it is made, whether it has the required functionality and durability for our needs, how we can store and transport it, and its aesthetic features. This gives us a score that we can compare against other similar materials we have rated, and allows us to make transparent decisions.

Resource recovery

Advance Frank Wild’s commitment to sustainability by enhancing resource recovery efforts, expanding recycling capabilities, and minimising waste to landfill. Circular economy: We contribute to the circular economy through use of sustainable, recycled & recyclable materials, implementing waste reduction strategies, and optimising the lifecycle of our assets. Resource recovery rates: Our resource recovery rates for materials* for FY23-24 were: - 3.13% of materials in landfill - 25.74% of materials recycled - 71.13% of materials kept for reuse or repurposed *Materials includes any custom items or assets we produce, such as signage, built furniture, lanyards, merch, etc. It does not include food or other waste which is measured separately. Avoided waste and emissions: As part of our reporting process, we calculate the waste that has been avoided by implementing our sustainable practices, recommendations, design and material choices. This is estimated based on our experience in and understanding of the events industry and the typical or standard material choices and resource recovery. Last year we avoided 51 tonnes of material weight to landfill, and 141 tonnes CO2 emissions.

Community and diversification

We aim to foster a strong community connection and enhance diversity within our operations by engaging in volunteerism, fostering local partnerships, engaging diverse suppliers, and broadening our community-focused initiatives. Community partnerships: This year we are seeking more partnerships with local community groups, schools, or similar organisations to donate offcuts, excess materials, paints and assets. Recently we have made paper donations to a program developed for children and families to explore and create art together.

Supporting global projects through Treecreds

We audit the carbon emissions from every event, including pre-production and the live event. The emissions are then offset through Treecreds to support reforestation, wildlife preservation, biodiversity support, and conservation projects both in Australia and around the world. Through this partnership we ensure that we are doing more than simply buying a carbon offset.

Event sustainability consulting and project auditing

Our consultation service focuses on understanding and developing your sustainability goals, setting targets, and delivering a tailored action plan to produce outcomes that reduce your impact on the planet. Our auditing service measures your total carbon impact, provides a detailed emissions assessment, and facilitates carbon offset and formal certification for impacts. These can be engaged independently or in conjunction with each other.
