Honest to Goodness Sustainability Actions

Joined a net zero pledge

Honest to Goodness says it joined a pledge in late 2019 to reach Net Zero Emissions by 2030. It says it is working with local experts to set a baseline first, then reduce emissions over time. The company also says it will report its performance each year. Net zero means cutting emissions as much as possible and balancing any remaining emissions with removals or offsets.

Expanded bulk and refill options

At its retail store, Honest to Goodness says it has pushed bulk buying and refill choices to reduce packaging waste. It says bulk products made up nearly half of the store floor space by 2021. The company also says it offers fill-your-own bins, reusable containers, paper bags, glass jars, rPET bottles (recycled plastic bottles), and refill stations for liquids such as dishwashing and laundry products.

Cut waste in offices and warehouse

The company says it has made several waste-reduction changes in its head office and warehouse. These include LED lighting, reusable mugs and cutlery, recycled toilet paper, FIFO stock rotation (first in, first out, a system that helps reduce spoilage), and special bins for sorting waste. It also says damaged but safe food is given to staff or donated to OzHarvest, a food rescue charity.

Uses recyclable shipping materials

Honest to Goodness says its warehouse uses biodegradable, compostable, and recyclable paper void fill for shipping, and that it reuses boxes. It also says plastic packaging is collected by a recycling service. The company adds that it is still looking for better packaging options and that a compostable packaging trial did not work as hoped. That suggests it is still testing what can replace current materials.

Publishes sustainability reporting

The company says readers can download its 2020–2021 Sustainability Report from its website. It also says it self-reports its performance each year as part of its net zero work. A sustainability report is a public update on a company’s environmental and social actions, usually used to show progress and gaps over time.
