SBTi approval for climate targets

Mondelēz International received approval from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) for its short-term 2030 targets and its net zero target for 2050. The company said this strengthens its ambition to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its full value chain.

Published Snacking Made Right report

Mondelēz International published its 2023 Snacking Made Right sustainability report to provide stakeholders with transparent, measurable information on its environmental, social and governance efforts and initiatives.

Expanded Cocoa Life sourcing

In 2023, Mondelēz International expanded the agricultural initiatives in Cocoa Life, its sourcing programme that helps to combat deforestation. The company said 85% of its global chocolate cocoa volume was bought through Cocoa Life.

Increased renewable electricity use

Mondelēz International reduced its climate impact by switching to renewable energy sources in several production facilities. In 2023, 48% of the electricity used in its production sites was renewable, compared with 40% in 2022.

Reduced production emissions

Mondelēz International reduced its CO2 emissions in production by 34% between 2018 and 2023. The company also reported a 3.7% reduction in CO2 emissions in 2023.

Reduced water consumption

In 2023, Mondelēz International reduced its total water consumption by 15% compared with 2022. At the Herentals biscuit factory, an in-house water treatment station is used and canal water is used for certain cooling applications.

Improved mindful snacking

In 2023, 62% of net revenues came from Mindful Portion Snacks, up 45% from 2021. These smaller portions and products with Snack Mindfully pictograms are intended to encourage more conscious snack choices.

Certified palm oil sourcing

Mondelēz International said that all palm oil is already 100% RSPO certified since 2013.
