La Mariposa presents sustainability as part of its wider community and educational work in Nicaragua. Its philosophy links travel, climate change, local development and environmental justice, and it says it creates as much sustainable local employment as possible. The organisation describes visible, community-based operations, local sourcing, seasonal food, tree planting, nature reserves, eco-building, water collection and recycling, and projects requested by local people. It also states that environmental projects have become increasingly important, including native tree planting, support for local families, and efforts to preserve land, water and wildlife.
