Montado Sustainability Actions

Supports biodiversity and livestock

The Montado is a man-made agrosilvopastoral system where cork and holm oaks, pasture and livestock work together to produce cash flow and hold back desertification in Mediterranean Portugal. Trees generate cork, acorns and timber, while in its understory livestock grazing turns sunlight and rainfall into grass-fed meat and stable, long-term yields.

Improves soils and water storage

The Land Group’s precision grazing further improves these soils, storing more water and carbon, which reduces climate risk and supports productivity through droughts and volatile market cycles.

Limits chemical use

The Montado supports multiple species of domestic livestock on the same land, and its biodiversity keeps pests and diseases in check without chemical use.

Backs long-term cork value

Cork is a highly attractive sustainable material and a cork tree will live up to 200 years and provide 15–20 harvests. Cork forests also provide a natural barrier against forest fires.
