MUJI presents its sustainability approach as part of its founding philosophy of simple, useful products and careful selection of materials, streamlining of processes, and simplification of packaging. The company says it has addressed social issues since day one and, through its parent company Ryohin Keikaku, focuses on environment, products and packaging, and community. Its sustainability pages describe work to reduce carbon emissions, use renewable energy, reduce waste, and support circular design and reuse. MUJI also links its ESG approach to local communities and to product development across its stores, supply chain, and services.

Muji Sustainability Actions

Founding product principles

Since its founding in 1980, Ryohin Keikaku has upheld three core principles of product development: “Careful selection of materials,” “Thorough inspection of processes,” and “Simplification of packaging.” Guided by the philosophy of “This will do” rather than “This is best,” the company has consistently operated with these values at its core.

ReMUJI reuse programme

The ReMUJI program, which recycles used clothing collected from customers into new products, started back in 2015. The company entered the reuse business, in which collected old clothing — excluding underwear, socks, shoes and bags — is cleaned, remade and resold.

Expanded recycling collection

It expanded the scope of items collected at its stores to include skin-care PET bottles in 2020 and plastic space organizers in 2023 — both of which are recycled into polypropylene for new products — and down comforters in 2024.
