Community solar subscriptions

It’s a local clean energy option that makes solar power available to renters and homeowners with no up-front costs or expensive solar panels. Through community solar programs, residents and businesses can subscribe to an off-site yet local community solar farm to receive a portion of the solar power it generates in the form of community solar credits on their utility bills. These credits reduce the total owed to a subscriber’s utility provider each month, and Neighborhood Sun applies a guaranteed discount to the credits, resulting in savings.

No, that’s the beauty of community solar! There are no installations or homeownership requirements.

Free sign-up and billing

It’s free and easy to sign-up online. We need a few things to enroll you to a local community solar farm: a utility bill to estimate how big your share of the community solar farm will be based on your average electricity consumption, a payment method to have on file to pay for your discounted solar credits, and information about your household income to see if you qualify for the higher discounts often available to income-verified subscribers.

LMI community solar project

Neighborhood Sun and Ameresco partnered with Montgomery County on a community solar project in Maryland that was 100 percent dedicated to low- and moderate-income residents. The project launched its subscription campaign in November 2021 and was expected to provide 25 percent savings on electricity costs for eligible Pepco customers.

Managing community solar

Maryland-based Neighborhood Sun currently manages nearly 80 megawatts of community solar projects, enough solar to power more than 10,000 homes.
