Reduced operational emissions

Nike reports that it cut absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions from its operations by 69% in FY24 versus a FY20 baseline. The company also states that 96% of electricity used in its global operations came from renewable electricity in FY24. These figures indicate that Nike has already made material changes to its owned and operated footprint, particularly through energy sourcing and operational efficiency measures.

Lowered supply-chain emissions

Nike says absolute Scope 3 emissions from manufacturing and transportation fell by 36% in FY24 compared with FY20. The company links this progress to work across its supplier network and logistics system, including reduced inbound air freight and broader supply-chain efficiency efforts. This suggests active management of emissions beyond direct operations, although third-party assessors note that progress is not yet uniform across all targets.

Diverted waste from landfill

Nike reports that 100% of operational waste from its strategic finished goods suppliers was diverted from landfill in FY24, with more than 60% reused or recycled. The company also describes circularity initiatives such as recycling textile offcuts and using recovered materials in products and other goods. These actions indicate an established waste-reduction and materials recovery programme already in operation.

Published supply-chain policies

Nike has published a set of sustainability and compliance policies covering labour, chemistry, packaging, raw materials, and conflict minerals. Its materials state that facilities making and moving products must meet the Nike Code of Conduct and Code Leadership Standards, and that the company uses announced and unannounced audits and external assessments. This shows an existing governance framework for environmental and social oversight in the supply chain.

Expanded lower-impact materials

Independent and company sources both indicate that Nike has already incorporated some lower-impact materials into products, including recycled materials and recycled cotton. Nike also references cleaner chemistry work, restricted substances controls, and product design changes such as ReactX foam and Dri-FIT-related innovation. These measures show that material substitution and product redesign are already part of the company’s sustainability approach.
