B Corp certification achieved

In 2023 Playa Viva was awarded B-Corp Certification with a score of 110. Certified B-Corps are for-profit brands that use the power of business to build a more inclusive, equitable and regenerative economic system for people and planet.

Runs 100% off-grid

Playa Viva is run 100% off-grid. Its energy comes entirely from solar, its water comes from an onsite well, and it uses a whole-systems approach that goes beyond sustainability to regenerating and helping the ecosystem to thrive.

La Tortuga Viva releases

La Tortuga Viva (‘The Living Turtle’) is Juluchuca’s local sea turtle conservation project. Run by a team of fourteen local volunteers, together they have successfully released more than 450,000 baby sea turtles since 2010.

Regenerative Trust created

In 2013, Playa Viva instituted the Regenerative Trust. This is a 2% fee included in the total bill amount for all guests as a contribution to the environment and community of Juluchuca. This fund goes directly to support the ReSiMar Watershed Regeneration Program and its programs.

Annual impact reports published

Every year Playa Viva publishes a report summarizing its impact in the community. In 2018 it undertook an extensive project to survey its community, both its team and locals, and compared the results to a control group. It says it will do this same extensive survey every 5 to 10 years to get data on potential progress.

Permaculture farm in use

Playa Viva tends to its 200 acres of land, including its 20-acre permaculture farm, and works alongside the local community in regenerative ways to restore abundance through reforestation programs and a return to traditional permaculture methods.

Water systems and reuse

Playa Viva uses smart water conservation measures to ensure minimal consumption as well as replenishment of the local aquifer with even cleaner water. All grey water from sinks and showers flows to irrigate nearby gardens. All black water from toilets is processed with mini-living systems.
