Sheeps Back! The Sustainability Actions

Published fourth annual report

The Sheep Sustainability Framework released its fourth annual report in 2024. It says the framework now tracks the Australian sheep and wool industry across four themes: animal care, environment and climate, people and community, and financial resilience. The report also says the framework is still changing as new data becomes available. It added new measures, including biodiversity data, and built a digital dashboard so people can view current and past results more easily.

Expanded climate tracking

The 2024 report says more sheep producers are measuring greenhouse gas emissions. The share of producers using carbon accounting, which means counting emissions from their business, rose to 9.9% from 3% in the 2022 survey. The framework also says the use of carbon accounting methods tripled overall. This shows the industry is collecting more climate data, which can help it understand and reduce emissions over time.

Tracked biodiversity activity

The framework added new biodiversity data in 2024. It found that 72.6% of producers were doing deliberate work to measure, maintain, or improve biodiversity, which means the variety of plants and animals on farms. This is one of the first times the report has shown baseline data for this area. It gives the industry a clearer picture of how much land management work is already happening.

Improved pain management use

The report says the use of pain management for mulesing, castration, and tail docking kept improving year by year. Pain management means using methods or medicines to reduce suffering during these procedures. The framework also says the share of wool declared as non-mulesed increased for both Merino and non-Merino wool. These changes point to more attention on animal welfare in the sheep industry.

Built a public dashboard

The Sheep Sustainability Framework launched a digital dashboard on its website in 2024. The dashboard shows current and historical data in an interactive format, and it will be updated as new information becomes available. This makes the framework easier to use for customers, government, and other stakeholders who want to check progress. It also supports more open reporting across the industry.
