Smarterlite Sustainability Actions

Reduced battery waste in commercial buildings through battery-free exit signage

Over one hundred thousand exit sign batteries have been avoided by replacing traditional exit signs with Smarterlite battery-free exit signs over our product lifecycle. Over one hundred thousands kilos e-waste has been avoided, including batteries, plastics and circuitry, over which 90% is reported to end up in landfill, by replacing traditional exit signs with Smarterlite battery-free exit signs over our product lifecycle.

Reduced operational energy consumption in emergency exit signs

Up to 100% reduction in electricity consumption, depending on the model of exit sign used.

Manufactured Australian Made Battery Free Hybrid, Low Wattage Exit Signs

Our Hybrid Photoluminescent Exit Sign is made in Melbourne’s North, supporting local jobs, local capability and Australian manufacturing. This facility was the recipient of a Victorian Government grant for low emissions manufacturing. Reduced supply chain impact by replacing short-lived battery-backed competitor products with long-life, battery free, low-energy emergency signage. Reduces battery waste and e-waste, while extending asset life by approximately 2–5 times compared with conventional emergency exit signage. Aligns with government procurement priorities for Australian-made, lower-carbon and more sustainable technology. Boosts sovereign manufacturing while reducing long-term operating, maintenance and replacement costs for government assets.

Extended product lifecycle through long-life photoluminescent technology

Smarterlite has fundamentally rethought the lifecycle of emergency exit signage, our battery-free photoluminescent technology significantly outlasts traditional battery-backup systems. Smarterlite Exit Signs last 16 - 30 years, depending on the model installed. A building portfolio with 1,000 traditional exit signs would typically replace these assets 3 - 5 times over the same period due to battery failure. This not only reduces waste generation but also delivers measurable reductions in embodied carbon associated with manufacturing, distribution and disposal activities. The long-life performance of the technology also reduces the maintenance burden placed on facility managers and building owners. By removing battery testing, battery replacement and frequent exit sign replacements due to failure, organisations can reduce labour, disruption and ongoing operational costs while maintaining compliant emergency wayfinding systems.
