Hotel to Hands Soap Recycling Programme
Soap Aid’s Hotel to Hands (H2H) programme is an innovative circular economy initiative transforming hospitality and accommodation soap waste into life-saving impact.
Partnering with hotels and accommodation providers across Australia and New Zealand, H2H collects partially used hard soap that would otherwise be discarded, and recycles it into new, hygienic bars for distribution to vulnerable communities.
Through a multi-stage recycling process, soap is sorted, cleaned and reprocessed - proving that waste can be safely and effectively reimagined as a valuable resource.
The programme addresses two critical global challenges: the significant volume of soap waste generated by the hospitality sector, and the widespread lack of access to basic hygiene.
Globally, millions of soap bars are discarded daily, while billions of people still lack access to essential handwashing facilities.
Since inception, Hotel to Hands has delivered substantial, measurable impact.
Soap Aid has:
- Diverted over 400 tonnes of soap from landfill
- Recycled and distributed more than 4 million bars of soap globally
- Provided soap to over 666,000 vulnerable people, including vulnerable children and remote communities
These efforts directly contribute to improved hygiene and health outcomes, with handwashing recognised as one of the key ways to reduce hygiene-related diseases by over 40%.
Hotel to Hands delivers strong environmental outcomes by reducing landfill waste, lowering carbon emissions, and minimising the need for new raw materials. At the same time, it creates social value by supporting employment pathways in the recycling process and partnering with community organisations to deliver hygiene education alongside soap distribution.
