Sorel says it completed its third year of disclosing Scope 1, Scope 2, and Scope 3 greenhouse gas emissions in 2020. Uses Higg FEM in supply chain

Sorel says it uses the Higg Index Facilities Environmental Module, or Higg FEM, to check how factories perform on issues like energy, water, waste, and chemicals. The Higg FEM is a tool that helps factories measure environmental impact in a standard way. The brand said this is part of a wider manufacturing program that looks at partner facilities and uses that information to guide improvements.

Expanded eco-conscious styles

Sorel said that in 2021, 84% of its styles included at least one eco-conscious element. Examples it gave included leather from Leather Working Group, or LWG, certified tanneries and PFC-free waterproof finishes. PFCs are chemicals often used to make products repel water. The brand also said its eco-conscious products can include lower water use, less waste, or lower greenhouse gas emissions.

Shifted to certified leather

Sorel said that from its F21 collection onward, 95% of its leather vendors were Leather Working Group certified. LWG is a group that certifies leather suppliers on environmental practices. The brand also said it aimed to work with 100% LWG-certified suppliers for its Spring 2022 collection. It added that some leather in its eco-collection is dye-free and chrome-free, which can reduce energy, water, and chemical use.

Set fair labor standards

Sorel says its Standards of Manufacturing Practices, also called its Supplier Code of Conduct, set fair labor rules for manufacturing partners. It says the standards are based on International Labour Organization, or ILO, conventions and Fair Labor Association, or FLA, standards. The code covers 12 core areas and includes a ban on forced labor. This is meant to guide how suppliers treat workers in the supply chain.

Joined Better Work

Sorel said that in 2020, through Columbia Sportswear Company, it strengthened its fair labor program by joining Better Work. Better Work is a partnership between the UN’s International Labour Organization and the International Finance Corporation, which is part of the World Bank Group. The program works with brands, factories, governments, and workers to improve labor conditions in global supply chains.

Uses plastic-free packaging
