Stadium Sustainability Actions

TRUE Platinum zero waste

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the first stadium worldwide to be awarded with the environmentally coveted and globally recognized Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) Platinum certification for its zero waste efforts. The stadium is committed to achieving Zero Waste, defined by diverting 90% or more of all waste from the landfill. Through the implementation of a comprehensive recycling and composting program, it has diverted over 90 percent of all waste generated at the stadium away from landfills.

LEED Platinum certification

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is the first professional sports stadium to achieve certification in North America. The stadium achieved LEED Platinum and received all water-related credits as part of the certification. It is designed to be extremely energy efficient, leveraging renewable energy sources and innovative design to reduce electrical use by 29%.

Food recovery donations

Mercedes-Benz Stadium has partnered with Second Helpings Atlanta to donate unused food from the stadium to provide meals directly to the Westside Atlanta community. To date, more than 250,000 pounds of food have been donated to Second Helpings Atlanta, creating over 208,000 meals for Atlanta residents in need.

Solar power and energy use

The stadium site, and Georgia World Congress Center campus, is equipped with 4,000 solar PV panels. These solar panels are located in highly visible areas such as the stadium’s ticketing canopies, parking areas, and VIP Entrances to provide shade and help raise awareness for renewable energy. The solar panels at Mercedes-Benz Stadium produce approximately 1.6 million kilowatt hours of renewable energy per year.

Stormwater and water use

Mercedes-Benz Stadium is equipped with a 2.1 million gallon stormwater management system made up of bioswales, a cistern, and a stormwater vault. The stadium’s 680,000-gallon cistern harvests rainwater that is used for irrigating the exterior landscape and for make-up water for the stadium’s cooling towers. The stadium is designed to achieve a 47% reduction in water use.

Allegiant waste diversion

Allegiant Stadium recycles, composts, reuses, or donates 20+ various material types. On average, 12,000 pounds of kitchen prep cuttings and end of event food scraps are collected per large stadium event and provided to a local Las Vegas livestock farm and used as feed for farm animals. In 2024, 158,680 pounds of grass clippings and landscaping waste and compostable leafware was composted.

Cigarette waste to energy

Allegiant Stadium is the first Stadium in the U.S. to divert cigarette waste from the landfill and convert that waste into energy. The stadium says the program is improving landfill diversion, aiding in fire prevention, contributing to water improvements, and enhancing overall community health.

100% renewable power

Allegiant Stadium is 100% powered by Nevada-sourced renewable energy. The stadium also features energy efficient design elements including a state-of-the-art chiller plant, high efficiency air handling units, energy optimizing lighting, and an energy efficient lighting control system.

LEED Platinum O+M

In August 2019, U.S. Bank Stadium became the first professional sports stadium to become certified LEED Platinum for Operations and Maintenance (O + M). In February 2018, it achieved a Zero Waste Super Bowl with 91 percent of waste diverted from landfills through the stadium’s investment in top-of-the-line infrastructure and efforts in building a sustainable, environmentally friendly operation.
