Therma Kōta presents itself as a made-to-order outerwear and home goods brand with sustainability built into its production model. It says it makes products locally in Canada, uses as little excess as possible, and avoids over-producing inventory. The brand also reuses fabric and shearling off-cuts across accessories and home items, ships products in recycled cardboard, and prints hangtags on recycled paper. Its sustainability statement describes shearling as a renewable natural resource and a by-product of the food industry, and says it is biodegradable. The brand also notes that it is constantly evolving its sustainable practices.

Therma Kōta Sustainability Actions

Made-to-order production

At Therma Kōta, ‘waste not, want not’ informs all we do. We believe that making our products locally in Canada (versus off-shore), to last a lifetime, with as little excess as possible, helps to greatly reduce our eco-footprint. With our made-to-order business model, we don’t over-produce excess inventory.

Fabric off-cuts reused

Fabric cuttings are used to make tote bags, aprons, makeup bags and scrunchies. As each shearling coat is being created, mittens are made with the extra material off-cuts. Smaller pieces are cut into geometric shapes to be sewn together for our Hygge Handbag and Home Collection.

Extra shearling redistributed

Extra shearling pieces are given to Indigenous makers of baby moccasins and baby mittens. The tiniest remaining pieces are then used to fill pillows.
