Reuses treated wastewater

Viyellatex says it reuses treated wastewater from its effluent treatment plant (ETP, a system that cleans dirty water from factory processes) for toilet flushing across its site. The company says this helps 9,000 workers and saves about 100 million liters of underground water each year. This is a water-saving step that reduces the need to pump fresh groundwater for basic use.

Collects rainwater for factory use

The company says it has a 250,000 square foot rooftop rainwater harvesting system. It uses the collected water for fabric dyeing, washing, and other factory needs. Viyellatex says this saves around 28 million liters of underground water every year. This is another water-management step that lowers pressure on local groundwater supplies.

Reuses heat from generators

Viyellatex says it captures exhaust heat from its 5 MW gas generator and reuses it for cooling. It also reuses exhaust from its 3.2 MW gas generator to make steam. The company says this saves energy and cuts carbon emissions at the same time. In simple terms, it is trying to get more use out of energy that would otherwise be wasted.

Turns organic waste into compost

The company says it makes about 30 tons of organic compost fertilizer each month. It uses lunch leftovers, kitchen waste, cotton dust, cow dung, water hyacinth, and other natural materials. Viyellatex says tests by Bangladesh’s Department of Environment found the fertilizer to be very effective, although it has only been used at the tea estate so far. This shows an effort to turn waste into a useful product instead of sending it away.
