White House Black Market Sustainability Actions

Implemented 3D design technology

As of 2022, Chico's, Soma and White House Black Market have all implemented 3D technology into their design processes and continue to adopt the practice across larger portions of their assortments. 3D technology reduces the number of physical samples shipped each season by leveraging 3D modeling of product designs throughout the development process.

Used sustainable denim finishing

White House Black Market & Chico's have also emphasized a heavier reliance on sustainable techniques in its denim finishing processes. This includes laser printing, mechanical dry processing techniques, biodegradable cellulase enzyme finishes and ozone bleaching, designed to reduce reliance on potentially harmful chemicals.

Added sustainable fiber fabrics

Across denim, swim and everyday essentials product lines, White House Black Market® has recently introduced 19 fabrics with sustainable fiber content, including Lenzing's Tencel™, Lenzing's EcoveroTM, Unifi's REPREVE®, and other recycled polyester, and lyocell fibers.

Launched jeans recycling program

White House Black Market® teamed up with Cotton Incorporated's Blue Jeans Go Green™ denim recycling program to launch Give Back: Recycle Your Jeans with WHBM® in January 2022. The pilot program saw over 8,000 lbs. of denim collected from shoppers at White House Black Market® stores from January through February.

Introduced mindful fabrics

In 2022, the company introduced 36 new mindful fabrics for a total of 98 mindful fabrics now featured in its collections. By the end of last year, 8 percent of Chico’s FAS apparel receipts used one or more mindful fabrics.

Expanded Higg Index reporting

Chico’s established ESG goals in three categories—short-term, mid-term and long-term—that are informed by the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Those goals include implementing Higg Index sustainability reporting for the top 80 percent of its Tier 1 vendors and factories, which hit a 58 percent participation rate in 2022, a 100 percent increase from the year prior.

Donated and recycled bras

Over 51,300 bras were donated from Soma’s Bra It Forward campaign in 2022, with over two million bras donated since 2010.
