Greener thinking for a better tomorrow

Woolworths is committed to creating a greener future, and we are getting there by reducing food waste, reducing plastic, sustainable sourcing, energy efficiency and animal welfare.

To make it easier for our customers to continue embracing a greener future, we have introduced a number of initiatives to reduce the amount of plastic in our stores, supported by recycling labelling initiatives, as well as making improvements in energy efficiency, sustainable sourcing and reducing food waste.

Whilst we’ve made pleasing progress, we know there is still much more to be done to meet our customers and our own aspirations.

Reducing Food Waste

Reducing food waste in Australia remains a top priority for Woolworths. Together with our customers, our farmers and our community partners, we’re working to keep good food out of landfill and ensure that we become Australia’s most sustainable grocer. - 100% of our stores now have a program to keep food out of landfill - In 12 months, we diverted 33,157 tonnes of food waste from landfill to our food relief partners or donated to farmers as feedstock - The equivalent of 20 million meals are provided to Australians in need every year through our support of partners such as OzHarvest, FoodBank, and FareShare - Since 2015, 156,000 tonnes of the 'Odd Bunch' fruit and vegetables have been purchased by customers, helping to divert that produce from landfill

Reducing Plastic

We understand the growing concerns from many of our customers about reducing plastics in our stores and we’re working hard to do just that. While the removal of single-use plastic bags from all our stores was an important step forward, it's certainly not the end of our sustainability efforts. - In two years, we have taken more than 6 billion plastic bags out of circulation - Now we are free of plastic straws, over 134 million straws are removed from circulation every year - We have removed around 890 tonnes of plastic packaging from our Woolworths branded fruit and vegetables and bakery ranges in the past two years - In the past twelve months, over 1378 tonnes or approx 10,600 shopping trolleys* of soft plastics have been recycled through its in-store RedCycle program *Based on average 210-litre shopping trolley holding 130kg.

Energy Efficiency

At Woolworths, we support Australia's commitment under the Paris Agreement to limit global warming to 2 degrees above pre-industrial levels and work towards containing warming to 1.5 degrees. We are working hard towards reducing our emissions and are continually improving the energy efficiency of our operations and actively scanning emerging technologies. - We are continuing to roll our energy-efficient LED lighting throughout all of our Woolworths supermarket stores - Over 120 Woolworths Group sites now have solar panels installed - All of our 900+ Woolworths supermarkets and 50 Dan Murphy's stores have been connected to our Energy Management Centre, which identifies opportunities to reduce energy consumption across our network
