Ziba Foods LLC is an artisanal food company focused on heirloom and wild-grown dried fruits and nuts from Afghanistan. Its sustainability and social impact messaging centres on working directly with family farms and village cooperatives, supporting Afghan women and farmers, and creating jobs through production in Kabul. The company describes its products as nutrient-dense, sustainably grown, and socially responsible, and it places emphasis on traceability, transparency, and paying farmers at the time of purchase. It also operates a traceability programme intended to improve farming practices and provide farmers with testing, education, and follow-up mentoring.

Ziba Foods LLC Sustainability Actions

Supports Afghan women and farmers

Every purchase supports Afghan women and farmers. Ziba says it is a social enterprise with a focus on providing sustainable impact to marginalized communities, particularly for women and farmers in Afghanistan.

Employs women in Kabul

Ziba’s workforce at its Kabul facility is predominantly female. Ziba employees receive full-time employment and earn above a living wage, and they also have access to English lessons and are taught the skills necessary to work with the modern machinery in the factory.

Sources from family farms

By working directly with family farms and village cooperatives to source true heirloom fruit and nut varieties, Ziba presents only the highest-quality agricultural products, many of which are grown wild.

Pays farmers at purchase

Ziba always pays for its goods at the time of purchase. As soon as a farmer’s available harvest passes the quality control and inspection process, the farmer gets paid, in cash.

Runs a traceability program

Ziba’s traceability program focuses on testing, education, and follow-up & mentoring. The program is designed to benefit the end consumer as well as the farmers the company works with.
