How to dispose of Prescription & OTC Medications

Expired or unwanted medicines — whether prescription, over-the-counter, herbal supplements, or topical creams — should never be flushed down the toilet or thrown in the bin, as they can contaminate waterways and pose safety risks. Australia's NatRUM (formerly RUM) Program makes proper disposal free and easy.

    Expired or Unwanted Medicines

    Check the Label: Review all medicines in your home — check expiry dates and assess whether you still need them. Prepare It: Remove medicines from your storage areas and place them in a bag or container. You can recycle any cardboard boxes or paper leaflets at home before you go. Dispose Right: Take your medicines to any PBS-approved community pharmacy — no appointment needed, it's free and confidential. The pharmacist will place them in a secure NatRUM bin, where they are collected and sent for high-temperature incineration at licensed facilities in line with EPA requirements.
