Protect-A-Bed® pillow protectors are available in a range of top sleep surfaces, each with their own environmental footprint. If you're looking for the most sustainable choice, we recommend Tencel™. From forest to fabric, Tencel™ is a sustainably manufactured textile. Crafted from wood pulp sourced from plantation timber, it is produced in a closed-loop process that recycles water and reuses nearly all solvent, delivering exceptional resource efficiency and minimal environmental impact. Perfect for bedding, Tencel™ fibres are naturally soft and ideal for sensitive skin, thermoregulating to help you sleep cool and comfortable, hygienic by nature — minimising moisture build-up and creating a less hospitable environment for bacteria than polyester or other synthetics — and flexible and durable, distinguished for their strength among other cellulose fibres. Please note: all our products contain a Polyurethane Miracle Layer. We are currently exploring more environmentally friendly alternatives for this component. All our products are OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certified, meaning every component — from fabric to thread to the Polyurethane Miracle Layer — has been independently tested for harmful substances and verified to be harmless to human health.

Exclusive to Protect-A-Bed mattress and pillow protectors, Fresche® is a plant-based anti-microbial that is naturally safe, durable and highly effective. Destroying 99.99% of bacteria and inhibiting mould, odours and dust mites, it is hypoallergenic, OEKO-TEX 100 approved and contains no poisons, toxic chemicals or metal ions. At the end of its life cycle, Fresche® is harmless to the environment, breaking down to form nitrogen, oxygen, carbon and sand. You will find Fresche® in the majority of our products.

The majority of our range now comes in packaging that is 100% cardboard, made from at least 50% recycled content. It can easily be disposed of, for recycling, in your home recycling bin. Where commercial requirements mean cardboard isn't yet viable, we are transitioning from PEVA to reusable LDPE or fabric alternatives. We are an APCO (Australian Packaging Covenant) Member and assessed as operating at Beyond Best Practice.

With our environmental footprint in mind, we have a number of operational initiatives in place. Our Melbourne facility runs on solar power, saving hundreds of tonnes of CO₂ emissions. Autonomous mobile robots have significantly reduced paper-based order picking, and electric forklifts reduce our consumption of fossil fuels. We also recycle all materials where possible.

Our products are currently distributed via diesel road freight. Reducing the environmental impact of our distribution is an area we are committed to improving, and we are exploring lower-emission alternatives as they become viable.

At this point in time, at end of life your pillow protector should be disposed of in your household waste bin. However, we are actively working towards future recycling solutions. As a participant in the Top-of-Bed Working Group led by the Australian Bedding Stewardship Council (ABSC), we are contributing to the development of industry-wide recycling infrastructure across all top-of-bed materials. Independently, we believe we have also identified a potential partner capable of recycling returned products and off-cuts into household goods — something we are continuing to explore
