Matched electricity with renewables

Amazon says it matched 100% of the electricity used across its global operations with renewable energy in 2025. That includes data centers, offices, grocery stores, and fulfillment centers. The company says this was achieved seven years ahead of its original 2030 target. In plain terms, this means it bought or generated enough renewable power, such as wind or solar, to cover the electricity it used, even though that does not always mean every building was directly powered by clean energy at every moment.

Built the Climate Pledge

Amazon co-founded The Climate Pledge in 2019 with Global Optimism. The pledge brings together companies and other partners that aim to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040, which means cutting emissions as much as possible and balancing the rest with removals or other measures. The initiative is meant to push wider climate action across business sectors, not just inside Amazon itself.

Expanded water stewardship work

Amazon says AWS is about 75% of the way toward its water positive goal as of the end of 2025. Water positive means returning more water to communities than it uses in its direct operations. The company also reported a project in Italy with Aganova to reduce water loss using AI-powered acoustic leak detection, and it said it plans to use recycled water to cool data centers at 120 locations by 2030. These steps focus on lowering water demand and improving reuse.

Cut packaging and food waste

Amazon reported that it had donated 52 million meals-equivalent globally and is working toward a 50% reduction in food waste across Europe and U.S. operations by 2030. It also highlighted packaging work in Europe and India, including a project with IIT Roorkee to turn agricultural waste into biodegradable paper mailers. Biodegradable means a material can break down over time through natural processes. The goal is to reduce plastic use and lower waste from shipping.

Grew electric delivery fleets

Amazon says it has deployed more than 10,000 electric vehicles in India, beating its target one year early. It also said it plans to put 100,000 electric delivery vehicles on the road by 2030, supported by Rivian and other manufacturers. Electric vehicles can cut tailpipe pollution because they do not burn fuel while driving, although their total climate impact still depends on how the electricity is made.

Launched sustainable shopping labels

Amazon introduced Climate Pledge Friendly in 2020 to help shoppers find products with sustainability certifications. The program spans categories like grocery, household, fashion, beauty, and electronics. It also added Compact by Design, an externally validated label for products designed to use less excess air or water, which can reduce packaging and shipping emissions. The program uses third-party certifications to help customers spot products that meet certain environmental standards.
