BED|STÜ describes sustainability as central to its sourcing, production, and shipping. The brand says it uses the whole hide to reduce leather waste, vegetable tanning with natural tannins instead of chromium, and materials such as water-based glues, natural latex, and plant-based dyes. It also states that its products are made by hand and designed to last, with repair used to keep items in use. The company has also referenced reducing its carbon footprint, using recycled industrial waste in some soles, and supporting relief and community organisations through donations and collaborations.

BED|STÜ Sustainability Actions

Used whole hide leather

To avoid as much waste as possible, we use the whole hide. Many other companies choose to use only the parts of the hide without marks, scratches or imperfections, but to us, those imperfections are what makes each piece unique, plus we don't have as much leather waste.

Vegetable tanning process

In 2014, we began taking larger strides towards sustainable practices. After finding that the industry-standard leathers contained chromium, formaldehyde, and other harmful chemicals, we set out to create our own proprietary tanning blend. Sourcing from nature, we began using natural ingredients such as tree bark tannins, ensuring our process remains free of these toxic substances.

Chrome-free leathers

In 2015 we took things into our own hands as industry standards changed. We began shipping 100% Vegetable Tanned leathers, with independent testing from SGS, certifying that our leathers will remain Chrome Free & Formaldehyde Free.
